MARCUS ANDERSON REVIEW For the past few years, Eric Darius has been holding court as contemporary urban jazz’s sole hip young soulful saxman bridging the gap between the genre’s usual 30s-50s demographic and the kids being raised on hip-hop who are increasingly paying attention to the instrumental side of the groove. While 23-year-old sax phenom Marcus Anderson is still pretty much a local sensation with gigs galore around Durham—where he’s a jazz studies student at North Carolina Central University—that all should change soon thanks to his dynamic swirl of infectious melodies, seductive, in the pocket beats and colorful production on his star-making debut My Turn. Having performed or shared stages with Darius, Bob Baldwin, Ken Navarro, Alex Bugnon, Mike Phillips, Kirk Whalum, George Duke, Everette Harp and Gerald Albright, Anderson’s hardly a novice. Performing around these all-stars, he’s no doubt learned the value high impact emotional playing and the importance of radio-ready hooks and danceable rhythms. He comes out with both barrels blazing on the bubbling, high energy funk opener “That’s The Way Love Goes,” on which he blissfully goes wild and jazzy-improvisational after establishing the main thrust of the tune. Anderson quickly establishes his equal penchant for thoughtful romantic ballads on the sweetly hypnotic “Warmth Of Your Smile,” a wondrous flow that continues on the gorgeous soprano-driven “Last Dance,” the wistful “Waiting For You” and silky cool of “Second Time Around.” Anderson’s truest heart is revealed on the sensual “My Turn,” whose passionate twists and turns are enhanced by powerful horn textures that bring to mind some of the best works of Everette Harp and Nelson Rangell. With the potential radio tracks stacked up front, Anderson goes a little edgier later in the tracking with the moody, horn stacked sax-key duet “All The Way” and the slow-brooding fusion burner “Hard Groove,” with Mark Green’s crackling electric guitar pairing with Anderson’s sax and then going off for an unforgettable solo. With one of the genre’s most compelling indie releases of 2008, Anderson proves on My Turn that he’s definitely got what it takes to compete with the veterans for chart space and main festival and cruise stages alike. His rise is going to be a blast to watch!
